Follow These Basic Steps when Creating Your Personal Brand

Certainly, everyone has an idea of what a brand is. McDonald’s, Honda, Pepsi. But not everyone wants to be involved in building their own brand. And you might be wondering and asking the question, “Does it really matter?” 

Here is why it does.  Whether you are a student, fully employed, or seeking for a job, you must think, plan and act like a business leader.  The growing upsurge in social media means that there is a need to manage your personal status both offline and online.

As a job seeker, it is now part of your prospective employer’s jobs to Google you even before inviting you for an interview. And as you relate with people both online and in the real world, over time they will build and develop an image of who they think you are. This is why there is need to have a control of how you want people to see you.

Personal branding is about what you are and the kind of impression you want to create on people about yourself.  Though this is not so straightforward to achieve, there are certain steps to follow to make the steps a lot easier to climb.

First you need to have a theme for your brand. Look for a word or phrase that summarizes who you are and your unique qualities. This is the basic step towards achieving your personal branding objective.  You can follow these steps to achieve this:

1. What is Your Emotional Appeal?

Consider your personality and the impact it has on people that relate with you. Ask yourself what qualities you have within that make people want to associate with you.  Are you very effective in managing time? Does your good sense of humor always lure people to you?

If you are not so certain yet what these qualities are, you can find answers to such questions like: how do I make others feel? What do others benefit when they work with me? What are the common words people use to describe me? When you provide answers to these questions, write them down in the form of a list. Those would help you identify your emotional appeal.

2. Next is to determine your descriptive modifier.

 These are words that tell you the recipients or audience of your personal brand. Who are the people that will be more interested in your brand? In the case of a company, Wal-Mart’s brand is meant for Middle America, and Disney is meant for “the family”. Yours might be for a particular industry like the education or healthcare sector. It could even be a skill (“strategic” or “creative”). To help you find them, you will need to answer questions like: what kind of industry will I fit in? What are the words I can use to describe what I do? And, who is my target audience?

3. What exactly do you do? 

This might be related to your career, for example, financial planning, graphic design, writing, or it might broader than that, like organizer, manager, or socialite. Find out the kind of service you render and things you do that set you apart from others.

When you have put all three together, you would have created your own brand. Of course the job is not yet done: these steps will help you focus on things you need to keep doing in order to properly develop your brand.
