Managing Your Personal Brand

The internet has revolutionized the way we do things. It is an incredible resource for marketing, networking, career development and even job searching. Not only are we able to present our skills and talents into a one page resume, but we can equally create and manage our own blog, website, LinkedIn profile, Facebook profile and more. 

The power is now in our hands to define our own brand and create new ways of connecting to people and organizations. Dan Schwabel, the author of Me 2.0, is an expert when it comes to personal branding. His book is an international best seller and the second edition is already ready to hit stores. In a recent interview by Ron Ashkenas, a contributing writer with Forbes magazine, Dan Schawbel presented his view on personal branding.

Dan Schawbel believes that the recent technological advancement has made new research more available and more case studies are equally springing up. Websites are being created by millions, people are becoming more connected to the world, and they are all trying to make themselves heard. For instance, there are more than 500 million Facebook users and over 2 billion tweets on twitter every month.

He goes on to say it is becoming increasingly necessary to take the stance of personal branding to differentiate yourself from the global talent pool.  These days it is no longer enough to have an online presence. You also need to manage it! 

As an entrepreneur, you have to brand yourself or your company as an expert in something that relates to your core competence. For example, if you run a bakery business and your customers are college students from a nearby school, you are the “bakery expert for students”. You can now channel your approach towards that angle and talk about the most sought after baked foods for students, and which ones are your favorites. Dan further explained that when an entrepreneur becomes an expert, he is able to get the attention of the media, and use that opportunity to promote his business. 

Regarding ways an individual can monetize a personal brand, Dan pointed out that there are a lot of ways to achieve this, including social networking, blog advertising, ebook sales, consulting, and speaking, to name a few.  He emphasized that creativity with your business model is the key.

Creating an online presence and failing to make any effort to monitor and manage it is one of the biggest personal branding mistakes people make. A blogger who last updated his blog post in 2010 is only telling his followers (that’s if he still has any) one thing- no commitment. Any person serious about personal branding who has established an online profile should be dedicated to providing quality contents to his readers on a regular basis.

If you are serious about personal branding, discover your true mission, whether it is a short term or a long term goal, and what you want people to know you for. Then focus your personal brand on your mission and connect with other people in the same field as you. No doubt, the results are real and the possibilities are endless.
